Vintage Irak

In such a drab world, a person with character goes a long way. It's something you see less and less of these days unfortunately. But back when New York was somewhat affordable, not so long ago I might add, there lived a crew that ruled the streets and these dudes we're definitely filled with character! That crew was Irak and they set the pace for what was and what will be without even knowing it. See below why things are so different now than they were before.

Sace Lives!

The famous wall on Bowery & Houston which once graced the art work of Keith Haring and Shepard Fairey has recently been given a proper make over by none other than NYC street bomber "Adek". In broad daylight, he painted an enormous "Sace" throwy in honor of the late artist, which was also known as Dash Snow. Amazing to say the least, and risky is an understatement. Alife X IRAK

Alife has always pushed the envelope when it comes to the NYC lifestyle. Their store on Rivington Street located in the LES is the central hub of street culture. Whether it's throwing parties with Slick Rick or Cypress Hill, dropping their latest collaboration, or simply just hosting a bbq cook out, there is always something brewing at Alife.

This month, Alife has collaborated with one of their own, Kunle aka Earsnot from NYC's IRAK crew, to bring us a sick collabo featuring three t-shirts, each packaged with a stress cube, key ring and a 'zine produced by IRAK featuring Dash Snow, Semen Sperms, Earsnot and photos that span over six long years of killing shit in New York. My personal favorite from the three shirts is the Wonka tee. Wonka is the current face of the NYC fixed scene and is known for his sick style of riding techniques and that photo of him tearing it down in Thompkins Square park really makes a great shirt in my opinion.

They are being released at US and Canada stores on June 6, 2010. Europe and the online shop will drop on June 13, 2010. Check em' out below.

Gone too soon...

The art world has suffered a huge loss this week. NYC's Dash Snow was found dead in a lower Manhattan hotel on Monday night. He apparently died of a drug overdose and was only 27 years old. I've written about him on here before as I'm a huge fan of his work and all the unique projects he managed to conjure up. He will be deeply missed and always remembered as the king of IRAK crew. Dash Snow

If there is any artist that one can call 'unique' it's definitely no-one other than NYC's Dash Snow. Also known (in earlier times) as Sacer from IRAK crew, Dash Snow is recognized as a very controversial figure in the art world as most of his pieces consist of urine, semen, spit and wax as well as his personal photographs. But believe it or not his work is highly sought after by many influential collectors such as Charles Saatchi, founder of the world famous Saatchi & Saatchi advertising firm amongst many others.

His father was an avid art collector and museum founder so he was born and raised into the art world that he grew to love. He started to get into photography around the age of 13 when he ran away from home and started documenting his life on the streets as a record of places he might not remember the next day. Those Polaroid photographs (see below) are now the aesthetic & foundation to his work. Instances of sex, drug taking, violence and art-world pretentiousness are documented with disarming frankness and honesty, offering insight into the decadent lifestyle associated with many young New York City artists and their social circles.

He has exhibited in galleries and museum's in London and NYC such as the historic Royal Academy of the Arts in Piccadilly as well as the better known Deitch Projects in New York's Soho district.
